Contemporary Legends in German Speaking Countries: Letters of Readers for Die Spinne in der Yucca-Palme of Rolf W. Brednich and after it

Abstract
In contemporary legends prejudices (e.g. wishes, hopes, fears, and fears of material loss, illnesses, injury of the private sphere etc.) are reflected. They are close to life and reality. These stories were collected by the folklorist Rolf W. Brednich and his students in Germany, which led in 1990 to the first German collection of contemporary legends Die Spinne in der Yucca-Palme. The book not only could attract numerous readers, but also Brednich’s call in his preface leds to an exceptionally broad resonance. Until 2009 Rolf W Brednich received about 6,000 letters in which his readers informed him about new stories, comments or literature so that he could publish four other volumes during the following years. The uniqueness of the German phenomenon “letters to the editor” as one of the most interesting facts in the folkloristic cultural research of the 20 th century. A part of these letters were analysed and categorized. The reception of contemporary legends in media (film, Internet etc.) is addressed. And now after the Spinne? For example, in Germany nobody of folklorists collects contemporary legends on the Internet now. In this paper I consider these problematic and the trend.

Haunted by the Middle Ages: Narratives of the Falls of Castles in Kikuma, Ehime Prefecture

Abstract
This paper examines the process of creating narratives of haunting ghosts in Kikuma, Ehime Prefecture, which are said to have originated with the falls of local castles in the Sengoku period. Currently in Kikuma, a tale of the Sengoku period which focuses on the fall of Koze Castle to Kobayakawa’s force in 1585 is widely shared among the locals. These narratives are reflected in the local people’s daily lives by means of deaths and other misfortunes caused by such haunting ghosts. However, the theory of the falling castle in 1585 has been questioned in the field of local historical studies in favor of another theory stressing the peaceful surrender of the local forces to the conquerors. In that case, if the existing theory of local history is questioned, the attribution of the haunting ghosts also becomes obscure. Examination of case studies surrounding the tales of the defeated warriors reveals that these form a part of local folk belief in the supernatural power of stone, which has gained popularity as an effect of the circulation of books to stress Kikuma’s surrender in 1585 published in the early modern period and local authority’s publications of a series of gazetteers after Meiji.

The Sacred and Profane in “Festivals That do not Stray beyond the Profane”: Case Study of Budget Travelers Participating in the Aomori Nebuta Festival

Abstract
This study attempts to analyze the phenomenon and deepen the discussion of the sacred and profane appearing in contemporary Japanese festivals, particularly by focusing on tourist participation.
Previous research predominantly argues that it is difficult for participants of contemporary festivals to escape the profane and move toward the sacred. In fact, it is easy to confirm the trend that festivals do not work in this way, in that they continuously switch between profane and sacred times. An example of this is that violence is strictly forbidden during such festivals.
However, many tourists who desire sacred time participate in such festivals. Therefore, this study focuses on budget travelers who participate in the Aomori Nebuta Festival, paying particular attention to changes in how travelers interact with violence.
Finally, this study notes the following two points. The first is that tourists become actors who support the festival that do not stray beyond the profane. The second is that from the perspective of ritual theory in symbolic anthropology, tourists’ ritual performance represents, on some level, sacred and profane times within the festival.

Thinking about Implications of the Modern Hot Springs Cure from the View of Rest

Abstract
The National Health Onsen Resort by the Ministry of the Environment is being replanned together with regional resources, it copes with a problem for the population and visitor’s decrease. In Hijiori spas that author has surveyed since 2012, training and expansion of hot spring masters spalier and dealing with hot spring cure consultation by a community clinic doctor had been promoted as a different program. Wellness tourism suggested by C.Voigt is meaningful concept to think about current hot springs cure and it denotes staying at destination of hot springs for rest. It complements medical treatment and recuperation and intends the state of well-being on both mind and body. In Japan since 21th century, Kurort and healthtourism are being promoted through programs which were assessed or certificated.
The case of visitor’s diary in Toyotomi spa shows that visitors can sense recovery of the symptom and modulation by hot springs cure. Staffs who experienced hot springs cure can give visitors some advices about the way of bathing and about how to have time. They are different from medical retreatments, and are related to mitigation of stress which accompanies the symptom on body and satisfy wellbeing of mind. Modern hot springs cure denotes connecting the hot spring with visitors more than hot springs themselves or recuperation effects.
The hot springs cure for rest is between medical cure and tourism. It implicates social well-being of the destination of hot springs for visitors and for residents.
